Silver Star is located in the Jefferson River Valley on Hwy 41, 17 miles south of Whitehall and 11 miles north of Twin Bridges.

Believed to be the third oldest town in Montana, Silver Star was once a prosperous mining town for both gold and silver, and it was the chief trade center until Whitehall was established in 1887. A prospector by the name of Green Campbell discovered gold in the hills near town and named his claim after himself. It was the first claim in Montana patent records and was very large and successful producer for many years. A post office was established in 1869 and a school was built in 1874.

As the years went by, the larger mining claims eventually closed. Named after a mining claim owned by George and Bill Boyer, the town of Silver Star gradually shifted from a mining community to being surrounded by ranches and farms.

Students attend school in Twin Bridges, though Whitehall may also be an option.

Favorite Places

Several small but unique gift & craft shops make Silver Star a nice place to do some browsing and buying. 

There's a state fishing access on the Jefferson River at the south end of town. Day use only, with good parking. The Jefferson is well-known for it's great fishing.
