News: Restoring Virginia City
Located just one mile west of Virginia City and once a very
active mining town, Nevada City now has only a few year-round
residents. Some of the of the buildings located here are original to
Nevada City, such as the Star Bakery. Many other buildings were
moved from their original locations and were restored for historical
preservation. During the summer the town is visited by many people
who enjoy this doorway to the past.
History
Nevada City, down the Gulch from Virginia City, was
a well established mining town in the early 1860's. Many business
houses were located three as a great number of miners worked in the
area. Many of the early business houses are still to be seen in
Nevada City. This historic mining community has been restored in
part by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bovey. Nevada City was named after
Nevada City, Nevada, another mining community.*

Favorite Places
Nevada City itself! I prefer to arrive early in the day for
plenty of time to explore Nevada City's outdoor museum of dirt roads
and preserved houses and buildings, and for a ride on the train
between Nevada City and Virginia City. Buy your train tickets early
and find out what the schedule is, then wander about Nevada City. If
you miss the train, don't worry. They'll be plenty to explore, and
the train will be back and ready to leave again the next hour.
